Disposal of liquid waste by injection into wells, usually constructed especially for the purpose, that penetrate deep, porous and permeable formations that are confined vertically by relatively impermeable beds. The method is used for disposal of saline water brought to the surface in oil wells, and for disposal of a variety of liquid wastes from industrial processes. Also called: deep-well injection.
