Job Summary

Serves as a project scientist within the KSC Utilization and Life Sciences Office (UBA00) as an expert consultant with responsibility for NASA Space Biology payloads designed and built for space flight at KSC and conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) and other future space exploration platforms.

Major Duties

  • Serves as a project scientist, leads and coordinates biological science projects and research.
  • Responsibilities include ensuring project managers for the Research Program are kept informed of development and processing activities being conducted at KSC, other NASA Centers, and outside organizations.
  • Conducts theoretical and experimental research on the physical and biological processes of living organisms and systems as related to space biosciences and controlled environments.
  • Supports projects focused on plant growth and food crop production.
  • Manages projects that include coordinating and conducting research, project planning, requirements definition, development, implementation, and operation for life sciences research projects.
  • Supports projects that include microbial, plant and animal research which require expertise in one or more areas of plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and/or plant physiology research.
  • Represents the science capabilities for payloads, experiments, and ground-based research projects with other NASA centers, and at major technical and scientific meetings.
  • This includes preparing technical material for publication in professional journals, NASA publications, and presentations at technical and scientific meetings. Publishes in national and/or international peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Acts as an interface with internal/external scientists and principal investigators in the mission development, execution, and close-out phases for studies, experiments, and projects.
  • Duties include participating in ground-based research projects and/or ground operation and space flight support activities, including launch and landing site science preflight and recovery activities.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.To qualify for the GS-09:Have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in theFederal service within biological processes of living organisms and systems as related to space life sciences and/or conducting theoretical and/or experimental research on physical or controlled environments ORCompleted all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field ORCompleted 2 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field ORHave an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed above.To qualify for the GS-11:One year of specialized experience is defined as professional experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service in applying conducting theoretical and/or experimental research on physical and/or biological processes of living organisms and systems as related to space life sciences or controlled environments; experience of microbial, plant, or animal research which requires experience in one or more areas of plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and/or plant physiology research; experience in biological payloads designed and built for flight to the International Space Station and/or implementation on other spaceflight platforms; and experience of space related biological responses and have experience in conducting related research OR Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree. ORHave an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed above.

Pay Range

$53,260.00 - $83,770.00
