Job Summary
SEASONAL POSITION (18/8 Schedule) located at the Pacific Northwest Research station in Juneau, Alaska. The incumbent will focus on the collection and management of field data (both on-the-ground and aerial) to support the team that provides technical advice, assistance, and guidance on forest health issues to Federal, State, private and tribal land managers in Alaska. Major Duties
- Conduct follow-up ground surveys to verify aerial survey results.
- Monitor aerial survey progress to ensure results are accurate.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct the annual aerial Forest Insect and Disease (FID) detection project to survey a large geographic forested area.
- Coordinate with Federal and State land managers and various forest health experts to determine areas to be surveyed.
- Provide survey reporting support to Forest Health Protection (FHP) pathologists and entomologists to complete special projects.
- Identify and map insect and disease occurrences from aircraft to provide survey results.
- Determine survey requirements to ensure safe and effective coverage for designated forested lands.
- Implement National and Regional aerial detection survey standards and aviation safety protocols to ensure standards are followed.
- Prepare aerial detection sketch-map survey data to incorporate into Regional and National databases.
- Responsibilities/duties listed are at the full-performance (GS-09) grade level.

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Participating in natural resource management activities by making observations, gathering data, and reporting findings; assisting in biological surveys data collection; assisting in field inspections and the collection of environmental data; assisting the project planner for one or more conventional environmental resources projects, such as construction, production, or reclamation activities. Assisting with inputting, manipulating, and displaying data utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS). OR Successfully completed 1 full year of graduate level education in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position from an accredited college or university. OR Superior Academic Achievement (go to this site determine if you are eligible: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp).The education was obtained at an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR An appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. The education must be in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position and obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Participating in natural resource management activities by making observations, gathering data, and reporting findings; participating in biological surveys data collection and results presentation; performing field inspections and collecting and analyzing environmental data; assisting a project planner for one or more conventional environmental resources projects, such as construction, production, or reclamation activities. Inputting data, manipulating, and displaying data via GIS (geographic Information Systems). OR Successfully completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position and obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR An appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. The education must be in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position and obtained from an accredited college or university and demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$48,368.00 - $59,165.00
