Job Summary
This position is located at a Research Station. Responsible for performing a variety of complex and recurring duties as a field crew leader in support of Forest Service research activities (specifically data acquisition for Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Coastal Alaska Unit). Major Duties
- The responsibilities listed below are at the full performance level.
- Performs project planning activities including scheduling, organizing, and executing field data collection projects related to natural resource inventory.
- Collects data needed to carry out biological science investigations. Develops work plans that include time and cost estimates, and the materials, supplies, and equipment to accomplish a study.
- Organizes, verifies, and refines the data collected. Studies and evaluates the data and writes up methods, findings, recommendations and other conclusions for approval.
- Carries out and support projects of limited scope; assembles and prepares material for field research work including selection of aerial photos, maps, and equipment.
- Uses botanical keys to identify plants encountered and assists in the collection and preservation of specimens.
- Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder, uploads and edits data, and completes accurate and concise plot summaries of all field visits.
- Serves as a resource helicopter manager in order to plan for and carry out Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) duties that involve the transport of crews and equipment to remote locations.
- Performs load calculations, and assists with monitoring and documenting helicopter flights and pilot duty hours. Plans for and promotes safety and accountability of helicopter operations.
Qualifications

Basic Requirement: Biological Sciences Series, 0401 Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major field of study that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major. OR
Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as: Experience working as a member of a data collection field crew. Collecting forest inventory, botanical or forest ecology data in a field-based setting. Producing summaries of field visits and data; interpreting standard procedures, and ensuring that data collection is accurate, repeatable and in compliance with established protocol. OR One full year of graduate level education. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work in fields such as forestry, forest ecology, botany, biology, ecology. OR An appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience described above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR

GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as: Utilizing field observations, aerial imagery, and historical site information to assign forest attributes. Leading field crews through difficult terrain; assisting with training forest inventory personnel to follow established guidelines in order to obtain multi-resource information. Producing summaries of field visits and data, interpreting standard procedures, and ensuring that data collection is accurate, repeatable and in compliance with established protocol; ensuring field crew data and summaries are accurate and comply with protocol. OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., in related fields described above for GS-7. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
Pay Range
$46,859.00 - $74,510.00
