Job Summary

This position is with the Natural Resource Management Team at New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National Recreation Area, and Bluestone National Scenic River, with a duty station in Glen Jean, WV. You will serve as the program lead for forest health, vegetation ecology, special status plants, and integrated pest management.

Major Duties

  • Prepares and implements natural resource management strategies and plans needed to successfully manage and protect the park's forests, other natural communities, and special status plants.
  • Coordinates the parks' integrated pest management programs for forest pests and pathogens, non-native invasive plants, and facility pests.
  • Coordinates program strategies with partners and adjacent landowners to achieve regional management objectives.
  • Develops and implements pre-project clearance surveys, project design criteria, mitigation measures, and restoration projects to prevent, minimize, or repair the effects of internal and external projects on forest health, natural communities, and special status plants.
  • Prepares environmental assessments (EAs) for projects in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Evaluates EAs and environmental impact statements prepared by other federal agencies or groups for impacts on park resources.
  • Coordinates research projects with cooperators to develop further understanding and more effective management of forests, other natural communities, and special status plants.
  • Designs, tests, and implements monitoring protocols for natural community processes and attributes and to determine the effectiveness of forest health protection and integrated pest management actions.
  • Performs data collection using advanced technology, when appropriate. Performs data entry and carries out quality control checks on data collection and entry performed by others.
  • Conducts analysis of complex data, including the use of GIS, and prepares management and scientific reports. Summarizes new and conventional information for use by scientists, managers, park staff, cooperators, and partners.

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must meet the basic requirement in one of the following ways: A. Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position - OR - B. Possess a combination of education and experience. This includes courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education In addition, you must also meet the minimum qualifications in one of the following ways: A. Possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service, carrying out studies or surveys of an ecosystem to determine its health or the impact of humans on natural resources; implementing resource monitoring protocols; analyzing study data to identify trends; and preparing reports on study findings - OR - B. Possess three years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to a PhD in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position - OR - C. Possess a combination of specialized experience as described in A and graduate level education as described in B that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. (Please note: only graduate education in excess of the first two years (generally, 36 semester hours) may be used in this calculation.) You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Pay Range

$62,236.00 - $80,912.00
