Job Summary

Army Public Health Center mission is to promote and prevent disease, injury and disability of Soldiers, military retirees, their Families and Department of the Army Civilian Employees; and assure effective execution of full spectrum veterinary services for Army and Department of Defense Veterinary missions. This position serves in the Health Effective Research or the Toxicology Evaluation, Toxicology Directorate.

Major Duties

  • Serve as Biologist responsible for conducting multidisciplinary studies and providing expert biological or toxicological consultation services.
  • Seek to improve risk assessment methods to improve prediction of adverse effects from exposure.
  • Define the pharmacological and toxicological and developmental effects of various toxicants. Translating results into qualitative and quantitative terms.
  • Establishe and maintain Good Laboratory Practices procedures.
  • Develop toxicological reviews of specific substances, researching published documents and provide synopsis of findings.

Qualifications

US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or expereince requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements 1.Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR 2.Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: For GS-11: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) developing quality assurance criteria for evaluating analytical chemistry and/or toxicology work performed in the organization; 2) investigating mishaps using hazardous analysis and/or other analytical techniques to identify and/or control unsafe acts and hazardous conditions; AND 3) performing studies to assess the feasibility of initiating proposed quality improvements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. For GS-12: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) designing toxicological studies that concentrate on the properties of chemicals and materials; 2) interpreting complex toxicological data from studies to publish findings; AND 3) assessing the toxicity of unique materials/chemicals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the Biologist GS-12 level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
