Job Summary
This position is located in the Section on Molecular Neurophysiology and Biophysics (SMNB), a component of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The SMNB study the roles of voltage-gated and neurotransmitter-activated channels in regulating neuronal development and synaptic plasticity in the mammalian hippocampus using electrophysiological, molecular, and biochemical techniques.
Major Duties
As a Biologist for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, your duties may include but not limited to the following:
- Possess sound theoretical understanding and practical experience with a broad range of scientific techniques.
- Keep abreast of technical and research literature, the incumbent contributes to the definition of research objectives by identifying suitable research approaches and selects the best methods and techniques to be employed to attain the goals set for the laboratory.
- Responsible for preparing and maintaining cell cultures (primary cultures as well as cell lines).
- Responsible for maintaining and organizing a large mouse colony.
Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university.
OR
A combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify for the Lead Biologist, GS-13 position you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently developing, planning, and implementing research; developing new methods for collecting, studying, assembling, or analyzing factual data; conducting comprehensive investigations; developing and preparing scientific reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform experiments; developing new protocols and procedures to use in conducting studies; assisting in managing the day-to-day operations of a research laboratory, including maintaining and organizing a large mouse colony, coordinating activities of laboratory research projects and personnel, and ensuring availability of equipment and supplies. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Pay Range
$102,663.00 - $133,465.00
