Job Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Range Management Research Unit with one vacancy in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Major Duties

  • Identifies requirements and implements advanced and complex analytical techniques to solve large-scale problems in agroecosystems.
  • Coordinates locally with scientists, other technical staff, and collaborators to identify data software and processing needs and to assist in developing plans for required upgrades.
  • Develops web-based user interfaces for accessibility of vegetation and environmental data for use by natural resource scientists, land managers, and stakeholders.
  • Expands interoperability of monitoring databases based on interactions with partners and work with research scientists to develop new uses and approaches for vegetation and soil databases.
  • Performs analyses of patterns in vegetation data with respect to environmental variables at landscape to regional to national scales.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: To qualify for the 0401 Series: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience in developing databases or analytical packages for large rangeland vegetation monitoring datasets and the integration of monitoring data with process models and land management decision-making strategies. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. **This Position is being filled through OPM's government-wide Direct-Hire Authority for this occupation and is open to all U.S. Citizens.
