Job Summary

General Information:Salary: GS-07 $43,251 (Step 01) to $56,222 (Step 10); GS-09 $52,905 (Step 01) to $68,777 (Step 10); NOTE: First timeFederal Government hires to are typically hired atthe Step 01. A 12.62% non-taxable cost of living allowance (COLA) may be added to the salary. COLA may be subject to change without notice. Post differential may also be applied to the salary. MajorDuties

As a Biologist within the Fort Collins Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Collecting Brown Treesnakes and other reptiles on Pacific islands.
  • Performing reptile identification, preservation of field specimens, collection and quality contol of data.
  • Participating in rapid-response-team deployments to other islands as needed to prevent snake introductions.
  • Using a variety of general software (e.g., MS-Excel, MS-Word, etc.) to track and manage project information. Performing quality assurance and control on data and transmit-data to project leaders. Compiling data and assisting with report presentation.
  • Assisting Supervisor with project management and oversight of lower-graded colleagues, interns, students, and other cooperators as assigned.
  • Operating a government vehicle.

Physical Demands:

The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Biologist, GS-0401-07:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Examples of GS-5 level experience could include:conducting field surveys for reptiles or amphibians using datasheets or automated data-collection platforms; conducting radiotelemetry on vertebrate species; preparing reptile or amphibian specimens for museum preservation; and computing, analyzing, and summarizing data resulting from field studies of vertebrate species. The tasks performed at this level were routine and usually entailed readily identifiable phenomena and environmental conditions; and the work was closely controlled and assigned with clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.

1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Biologist, GS-0401-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09:

One year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal serviceif it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position..

Examples of GS-07 level work may include:Assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations of vertebrate species in the field or lab; conducting radiotelemetry on reptile species; leading field crews in the implementation of scientific field studies of vertebrates; performing data analyses on portions of results from field studies of vertebrates; and receiving training on use of database software for organization of biological data. The tasks performed at this level involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.

**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
