Job Summary

This position is located in Cabrillo National Monument, Natural Resources Management and Science Division, located in San Diego, CA.

Major Duties

We are looking for a pro-active team member to manage the Natural Resources Management and Science Division, who is responsible for managing the people, funding and daily operations. The position is a key position on the management team, working closely with the superintendent and the four other division chiefs. There is a staff of less than 30 people in the park, but the effectiveness of the group is extended with our volunteers and partners for all divisions.The incumbent is responsible for:

  • Implementation and development of an integrated program managing natural resources, including both terrestrial and marine environments.
  • All aspects of developing projects for funding requests (e.g., FLREA, cooperative association), through full implementation.
  • Serves as the compliance manager for the park and will work closely with others on cultural resources management and compliance as well.
  • Supervises and manages the current program of two permanent staff, two terms, a seasonal, and interns.

Qualifications

THIS POSITION HAS A BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT IN ADDITION TO THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND/OR ADVANCED EDUCATION REQUIREMENT. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS for Biologist, GS-0401:

Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You must include a copy of your transcripts at the time of application.

-OR-

A combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.You must include a copy of your transcripts at the time of application. -AND- In addition to meeting at least one of the Basic Education Requirements identified above, in order to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of professional specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that is directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience participating in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables; performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; conducting studies using established fact-finding and evaluation procedures; conducting long-term monitoring of biological or ecosystem components; design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols; developing scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects; or developing and carrying out statistically valid data collection protocols. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in archeology, biological sciences, natural resource management, physical sciences, or other field directly related to the work of this position. Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months/years, hours per week worked and salary to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Pay Range

$69,301.00 - $90,097.00
