Job Summary

The incumbent in this position applies professional knowledge and skills in mapping and related sciences, and relevant mathematics and statistics to plan, design, research, develop, construct, evaluate and modify mapping and charting systems, products, and technology pertaining to plant health and associated initiatives.

Major Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Uses GIS software to create, prepare, and manage geographic data from a variety of sources, produce map products, and perform GIS analyses.
  • Works with employees from S&T offices and other government agencies on GIS-related projects and establishes effective communications to facilitate effective data management, visualization, and delivery.
  • Assists in processing field survey and ancillary data to support analysis.
  • Assists emergency response needs by providing mapping and data management support.
  • Provides basic GIS training and technical support to staff.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Must have a degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR Must have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic qualifications, all applicants must also meet the minimum qualifications. In order to qualify for the Cartographer position, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: GS-9: Must have at least one full year of specialized experience in cartographic and Geographic Information Systems at/or equivalent to the GS-7. Such as: utilizing GIS methodology and associated ESRI ArcGIS software; editing spatial data to effectively update and organize large quantities of data; creating map products using proper map design and cartographic principles; and utilizing ArcGIS geoprocessing, spatial analyses, modeling and cataloging tools to prepare maps, graphs and summary reports. OR Must possess a Master?s or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Major course of study must be in a field directly related to the work of this position. NOTE: You must submit supporting academic transcripts if claiming education to qualify. OR Must possess a combination of the specialized experience as described above and graduate education as described above, such that they total 100% of the stated minimum qualifications for this specialty and grade. Only graduate education in excess of the first 36 semester hours may be used when combining education and experience for this specialty and grade. Pay Range

$52,905.00 - $68,777.00
