Job Summary

You will serve as the technical expert for daily Geographic Information System (GIS) program operations and execution for the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program.

Major Duties

  • Ensure all geospatial data and products inputted or created in Geospatial Information System (GIS) are in conformance with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and Spatial Data Standards for Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE) standards.
  • Evaluate, build and update Sustainable Range Program (SRP) Geospatial Data in the Geospatial Information System (GIS) database from a variety of sources and formats.
  • Analyze spatial data collected for military training purposes in order to identify potential conflicts between features.
  • Identifies if other geospatial data exists for the installation and checks quality parameters identified in the related Sustainable Range Program (SRP) Geospatial Information System (GIS) Quality Assurance Plans (QAPs).
  • Conducts surveys of land utilizing various Global Positioning System (GPS) field survey equipment.
  • Develops and updates Military Installation Maps (MIM) by linking corresponding mapping layers in the installation geodatabase, utilizing Military Installation Map Toolkit (MIMT).
  • Validates data with the installation Subject Matter Expert (SME) for each data layer (i.e., Range Officer, Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program Coordinator, Range Planner, etc.)
  • Ensures all maps are to Sustainable Range Program (SRP) standards and based on standard military cartographic layout (i.e., SRP Style Set).

US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Cartographer ( Geospatial Information Systems Coordinator) A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in cartography, or a degree with a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience operating a Geographical Information System (GIS) computer-aided mapping workstation to generate survey, mapping, and engineering products; updating Geospatial data in the GIS database; and conducting surveys of land utilizing various GPS field survey equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
