Job Summary
Plans and executes professional cartographic and survey activities for Fort Meade garrison activities. The incumbent provides a professional knowledge base of cartography, photogrammetry methods, and topographic/legal/hydrologic surveys including the mathematical, geographic, and scientific basis for design, evaluation, and construction of maps, charts, and digital Geographic Information Systems (GIS) products.
Major Duties
- Coordinates the development of cartographic and survey products through research, control, compilation, drafting, establishing the basic geodetic and field controls, plus geo-referencing.
- Incumbent supports a variety of products in areas of planning, engineering, construction, emergency management, environmental applications, and operation and maintenance.
- Develops installation?s GIS application projects using software systems such as ArcInfo, ArcGIS and ArcView, ArcIMS, ArcPad, TerraSync, Pathfinder Office, ERDAS Imagine, and AutoCAD and Microstation.
- Applies professional and specialized knowledge in cartographic, photogrammetric, and survey skills when providing technical guidance to installation elements and private commercial contractors.
- Applies professional cartographic, photogrammetric and survey skills in preparing professional reports, including aerial photo interpretations, map analyses, and demographic reports for a variety of Fort Meade activities.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Cartographer (GIS): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in cartography, or a degree with a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites). OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning and estimating the production of maps of various scales involving manual and automated systems cartographic methods; AND research and analyze applications to support geospatial information and adapt standards and best practices in the solution of complex map problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11 or above). Pay Range
$86,335.00 - $112,240.00
