Job Summary

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Central Office, Office of Trust Services, Division of Land Titles and Records in a Aberdeen, South Dakota and Nashville, Tennessee. NOTE: TRAVEL AND RELOCATION EXPENSES WILL NOT BE AUTHORIZED. ANY RELOCATION EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH REPORTING FOR DUTY WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SELECTED EMPLOYEE. NOTE: TWO POSITIONS TO BE FILLED, ONE IN NASHVILLE, TN AND ONE IN ABERDEEN, SD.

Major Duties

  • Work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) on a daily basis to maintain cognizance of the Bureau's program.
  • Learn to redraft maps into formats necessary for accurate digitization and processes digital data obtained from outside sources.
  • Adhere to strict guidance before digitizing, scanning, or keying alphanumeric data using various computers, complex operating systems and GIS and image processing software.
  • Assist with collection, calculation, plotting, and digitize cartographic data for landscape features, ownership type symbolization, right-of-ways, and geographic coordinates.
  • Conduct regular database backups to ensure digital data archiving.
  • Research and collect available information for aerial photographs, orthophotos, satellite imagery, base maps and other cartographic source material that are assigned by management or higher graded specialists with detailed instructions.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for One-Grade Interval Technical or Medical Support Positions, and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-1371: Cartographic Technician Series). BASIC REQUIREMENT:

A. Experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills. I have at least one year of specialized experience or the equivalent, comparable to at least the GS-04 grade level (obtained in either the public or private sector). This experience includes compiling information from sources, assemble and sort into a complete map; cadastral survey and grid layout; perform drafting, digitizing, integrating, and editing/reviewing in connection with cartographic products.

B. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as those shown above for GS-3. Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: In addition to meeting the basic entry level qualification requirements, applicants must have the following: GS-5: If the basic requirement is met, that is qualifying for the GS-5 grade level. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date. Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (title 25, USC Section 472).

Pay Range

$34,916.00 - $45,393.00
