Job Summary

This position is located in Glacier National Park, in the Division of Science and Resource Management. Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Glacier National Park is May-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April or May if funding allows.

Major Duties

  • Apply ArcGIS software and existing data to produce effective cartographic products in support of all park staff at GLAC.
  • Develop new spatial data products (i.e. GIS data themes) that are based on GPS data collection or heads-up digitizing; apply new data to needs related to current park management.
  • Practice sound data management when creating or manipulating GIS and related data (e.g. MS-Excel); document new data and modifications to existing data using standard GIS metadata tools within ArcGIS.
  • Support park staff and cooperators in their use of emerging technologies such as ArcGIS Online and ESRI's Collector and Survey123 data collection applications.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal, written) and within reasonable timeframes with the "clients" of the GIS services that are being provided.
Government housing may be available.

Qualifications

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position applies Windows-based ArcGIS GIS software towards developing GIS data, applying GIS data to perform geographic analyses, and producing effective cartographic maps, and experience applying Windows-based ArcGIS GIS software towards developing GIS data, applying GIS data to perform geographic analyses, and producing effective cartographic maps is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

- AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills including spatial information collection and analysis, map creation and GPS data processing. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year (18 semester hours) of graduate study concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g. physical geography, photogrammetry, geophysics, or geodesy, or a related discipline. NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months, years and hours per week worked on your resume to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
