Major Duties

This job opportunity is for a Cartographic Technician position in the Geography Branch (GB), at the National Processing Center (NPC), U.S. Bureau of the Census located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. This position performs cartographic technician assignments in support of a variety of geographic coding allocation and boundary delineation operations. This position is included in the bargaining unit.

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Perform a variety of fundamental clerical tasks in support of branch operations such as geocoding, coding, editing, matching, transcribing, verifying, reviewing, etc.
  • Resolve geographic problems and referrals involving boundary and/or data collection discrepancies, by researching reference materials.
  • May be required to perform statistical tasks of similar complexity to assist the unit in other projects.
  • May be required to maintain daily/weekly reports and perform control clerk activities.

Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., Alternate Work Schedule is not available.

Qualifications

Youqualify at the grade 4 level ifyoupossess one year of experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills. This experience must have been equivalent to the grade 3 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal Service.Education Substitution: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as cartography, relevant mathematical and statistical sciences, or related sciences, e.g., physical geography or geodesy.Not more than 6 of the 12 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grade GS-4.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$31,208.00 - $40,569.00
