Job Summary
The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research provides the research foundation for understanding the complex systems that support our planet. Working in partnership with other organizational units of NOAA, a bureau of theDepartment of Commerce, OAR enables better forecasts, earlier warnings for natural disasters, and a greater understanding of the Earth. Their role is to provide unbiased science to better manage the environment, nationally and globally.
Major Duties
As the Director, the incumbent plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and evaluates NSSL’s severe storms research and applications projects and activities. The incumbent is responsible for:
- Providing expert scientific and technical direction in the development, implementation, and management of an integrated, sound and effective NSSL program that is responsible for identifying NOAA and national-level needs for the advancement of weather radar technology and the study of severe local storms leading to the improvement of warning and forecast services.
- Managing NSSL’s operational aspects for weather research and transition to operations programs including: financial management, budget development and justification, personnel management, and contract administration.
- Reviewing, analyzing and evaluating new and existing plans, programs and proposals for research and applications initiatives, as submitted by NSSL Division managers and project leaders, within the framework provided in the NOAA and NSSL Strategic Plans.
- Serving as a spokesperson for a variety of DOC-level programs and activities involving top-level program and research managers (internal and external to DOC), including meetings leading to the identification of significant research projects and establishment of transition to operations objectives.
- Chairing and/or serving on committees which greatly influence the direction of scientific research and/or technical applications of research to improve high-impact weather forecast and warning services.

An individual's total experience and education must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. NOTE: Responses to ECQs must not exceed 10 pages typed in 12-point font. Professional/Technical Core Qualifications (PTQs): PTQ 1- Broad understanding of the theory and application of atmospheric science and/or related engineering in at least two of the following sub-disciplines in order to design, direct and evaluate theoretical and experimental weather research efforts and apply the results of scientific findings directly toward improving weather services: synoptic and mesoscale meteorology; weather observations and forecasting; remote sensing; modeling, field observations, radar and its applications, data analysis, processing, and archiving.
PTQ 2- Knowledge of and skill in the physical and engineering sciences sufficient to broadly perceive complex weather research problems and evaluate research programs and their potential social and economic value at the local to international level, and the ability to infuse new ideas or approaches to research in atmospheric science and weather service-related applications.

Pay Range
$127,914.00 - $192,300.00
