Job Summary

The mission of the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES)is to expand the understanding of matter at very high temperatures and densities and to develop the scientific foundations needed to develop a fusion energy source.

Major Duties

As the Director, Research Division, you will:

  • Provide leadership and direction in establishing vision, strategic plans, goals, and objectives for the research activities supported.
  • Plan, develop, and implement vital, productive, forefront research programs conducted in DOE laboratories, universities, and other public and private institutions.
  • Ensure adequate funding support for all the activities in the area of responsibility, set priorities for activities, and apportions available funding among them. Manage the budget in accordance with prescribed practices set forth by the organization.
  • Advise and assist the head of the office in the formulation and management of new programs and policies.
  • Maintain strong, collegial relations with other programs within the office and the organization, as well as with DOE field offices, DOE laboratories, academic and other institutions both domestic and foreign, and the broad scientific community.
  • Manage, supervise, and direct a staff consisting of administrative, professional, and scientific employees.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to submit a narrative statement for each of the five mandatory Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) and each of the Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs). The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required by law to review the executive core qualifications of each new career appointee to the Senior Executive Service (SES) prior to appointment. MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (MTQs): In addition, applicants must specifically address the following technical qualifications which represent the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in fusion energy sciences which can include a background in plasma physics, fusion technology, and materials science sufficient to serve as a principal advisor for the division in the area of fusion energy sciences. This is based on formal training, extensive personal research and work experience. Demonstrate capabilities in scientific and technical leadership and in the management of scientific research programs including international opportunities/collaboration. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of new/emerging fields of science related to fusion energy sciences that could enhance/support overall domestic research both in fusion and these new/emerging fields of science as well as offer the possibilities of spinoffs for industrial use.

Pay Range

$168,165.00 - $192,300.00
