Job Summary

The employee serves as a developmental Environmental Protection Specialist and is assigned to the Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental, and Emergency Management Service, VA Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs, Birmingham, Alabama. Major Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-9. At the GS-7 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-9. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
The environmental protection specialist is responsible for specific regulatory compliance programs, including maintenance of plans and permits, regulatory reporting, and issue tracking.

  • Develops and maintains facility-specific Mercury Control and Reduction Plan, reviews plan annually.
  • Develops and maintains an inventory of number and types of mercury containing devices (medical and non-medical).
  • Manages the master chemical inventory for the facility; prepares portions of environmental plans, permits, and reports (e.g., for air emissions, wastewater discharge, solid and hazardous waste, fuel and oil storage, and spill prevention, among other areas) and maintains proper record keeping.
  • Employee supports water treatment activities to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.
  • Manages with hazardous waste and residual shipping activities; supports Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) program administration, management, and internal reporting activities; participates in environmental audits and incident investigations.
  • Provides assistance with root cause analysis, development of corrective actions, and tracking incidents to closure.
  • Provides support for the facility GEMS committee; supports environmental sustainability initiatives; conducts other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

For GS-7:

Possess a bachelor's degree in a field that equips me to perform the work of the position, and I have superior academic achievement S.A.A. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

(1.) Class standing--Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

(2.) Grade-point average (G.P.A.)--Applicants must have a grade-point average of: 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round down to 2.9.

(3.) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society--Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed below. These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies: Association of College Honor Societies Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. OR

Possess at least one full year of graduate level study, or possess a master's or higher degree, e.g., LL.B., J.D., LL.M., Ph.D., in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Such fields are (e.g. biology, ecology, chemistry, hydrology, environmental law etc.) A transcript or course listing must be submitted if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Applications submitted without this information may not be considered. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR

Possess at least one year of experience in understanding of environmental laws and regulations; or preventing or reducing pollution, and/or the relationship between environmental factors and human health; or understanding of regulatory requirements and pertinent statutes to assure environmental compliance; or collecting environmental data, verify results, and/or discuss technical aspects of the work with other environmental experts. OR

Possess an equivalent combination of graduate education and experience to meet the total experience requirements for the GS-7 grade level. NOTE: To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. Pay Range

$43,366.00 - $68,961.00
