Job Summary
The Fort Detrick Garrison Directorate of Public Works consists of Engineers, Scientists, Mechanics, Electricians, Painters, Carpenters, Power Controllers, Environmental Specialists, Supply Technicians, and Plant Operators, etc. The Forest Glen Annex is host to the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research (WRAIR), a world-class medical research institution. Regulatory violations could adversely impact upon the ability of the WRAIR to conduct critical research activities.
Major Duties
- Serves as a Junior Hazardous Materials Manager for the Forest Glen Annex (FGA) under the direct mentorship of the on-site Team Leader, the Senior Hazardous Materials Manager
- Ensures daily compliance of all regulatory matters associated with Hazardous Material (HM) and Hazardous Waste (HW) management
- Maintains the Hazardous Materials Management Systems (HMMS) database to ensure all HM data are collected and properly tracked
- Operates the FGA HW storage bunker, ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the State of Maryland
- Assists in the development of spill plans, environmental instructions and standing operating procedures (SOPs) pertaining to hazardous, non-regulated, and other types of waste
- Reviews and evaluates customer processes to characterize the structure, use, compatibility, condition, health hazard, reactivity, and spill precautions of HW and HM

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Experience using a database system to track chemicals; (2) Experience providing hazardous materials guidance for a medical research facility and; (3) Experience inspecting hazardous materials for proper storage, labeling, use, and disposal in accordance with all applicable regulatory requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). EDUCATION: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. In addition to meeting specialized experience, you can qualify if your education and/or experience meets the following: Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Environmental Protection or Environmental Protection Law and Policy. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Pay Range
$57,510.00 - $74,759.00
