Job Summary

Environmental protection specialists play a central role in planning and administering environmental programs. Environmental protection programs deal with the environmental impacts of human activities on air, land, water, and other media. Environmental protection specialists support VA's Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) implementation and apply specialized knowledge of one or more programs or functional areas of environmental protection work.

Major Duties

The Environmental Protection Specialist position is located within the Facilities Management Service at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Trains employees and lower grade environmental staff and participates in national-level committees.
  • Completes permits and leads facility self-assessments, inspections and other environmental investigations.
  • Leads environmental audits and incident investigations, conducts root cause analysis, develops corrective actions and tracks incidents to closure.
  • Responsible for facility environmental system management planning and implementation and assumes lead role in the development of facility environmental policy and documentation.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state and local regulations governing air emissions, hazardous materials, non-hazardous and hazardous wastes, oil spills, water quality and the storage of regulated substances (i.e. petroleum products, chemicals and wastes for the facility.)
  • Manages facility environmental management systems program to assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations for air emissions, wastewater discharge, solid and hazardous wasted, fuel and oil storage, and spill prevention.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday thru Friday, 8am - 4:30 pm.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following requirements: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) in Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of an Environmental Protection Specialist GS-11. Specialized experience includes: Experience with hazardous materials and waste and their uses, interactions, dangers, production, handling, storage and disposal; Experience with EPA permit requirements; Planning, coordinating and executing business functions as it relates to environmental management; Experience keeping an environmental program in compliance with federal, state and local regulations governing air emissions, hazardous materials, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, oil spills, water quality and the storage of petroleum and chemicals. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a related field of study. This education must have been obtained at an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described, may be used to meet the total qualification requirements. Pay Range

$62,236.00 - $80,912.00
