Job Summary

This position is part of the R7-Division of Migratory Birds. As a Fish and Wildlife Biologist (Airplane Pilot) you will plan, organize, direct, and conduct aerial and ground surveys on various species of wildlife gathering quantitative data on quantity, distribution and production; breeding and wintering grounds and migration and migration routes.

Major Duties

  • Conduct wildlife population surveys or wildlife monitoring.
  • Assist in the development of recommendations or management decisions for the benefit of natural resources based upon scientific information and/or agency policies and positions.
  • Use statistical software programs to analyze biological data.
  • Use geographic information systems and geospatial databases to display and interpret data.
  • Prepare written documents such as technical reports or scientific publications that present the results of biological studies.
  • Operate single engine, fixed-wing aircraft at minimum air speed and altitudes below 500 feet above ground level over unfavorable terrain in order to observe and record presence of wildlife or other natural resources.
  • Simultaneously follow a defined track-line and record wildlife or other natural resources during aerial surveys as Pilot in Command in single engine, fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Identify and estimate abundance of wildlife or other natural resources while conducting low-level aerial surveys as Pilot in Command in single engine, fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Take-off and land single-engine, fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft from off-airport locations (beaches, meadows, gravel bars, ridge tops, lakes and/or rivers) of limited size in isolated areas under marginal weather conditions.
  • Operate single engine, fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft in remote areas where weather reporting stations, radio aids to navigation, and communication facilities are limited.
  • Plan and oversee loading and unloading of aircraft utilizing knowledge of gross weight, balance, and performance capability.

Basic Requirements for Pilot Duties

You must meet the Basic Requirements for Pilot Duties for this position 1) possess a current FAA Commercial Airman Certificate with rating appropriate for the duties performed; 2) possess instrument rating, and 10 hours as Pilot-in-Command in actual or simulated instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions; 3) have completed a minimum of 500 hours of flight time as Pilot-in-Command; 4) have completed 25 hours as Pilot-in-Command at night; and 5) possess a current Class II Medical Certificate. Basic Education Requirement

You must meet the Basic Entry Requirements for Biologist, 0401 Completion of a full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position OR Combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e. 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four year course of study with a major as described above.

You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to perform scientific studies and surveys for the purpose of wildlife management and to present the results of such studies in written reports and/or oral presentations; OR A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or possession of a LL.M. degree, if related. Graduate level education must demonstrate the competencies necessary to do the work of the position, examples of qualifying fields include biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, and chemistry; OR A combination of education and experience as listed above. You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your ability to perform scientific studies and aerial wildlife surveys for the purpose of wildlife management and to present the results of such studies in written reports and/or oral presentations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-11/12. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-11/12. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Pay Range

$71,583.00 - $111,543.00
