Job Summary

This vacancy is for a Geographer position in the Population Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line – Suitland Station.This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Geographer, GG-0150-09/11/12, FPL-12 positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

Major Duties

  • Use geographic information systems (GIS) and other geographic methods to identify, process, analyze, and compare geographic and demographic patterns.
  • Design, develop, implement, analyze, and report on geographic projects using a variety of data.
  • Develop and use GIS and other geographic methods to prepare spatial databases, map population patterns, and analyze results.
  • Describe and analyze results of studies of population patterns.
  • Write reports, methods, documents, and articles.
  • Create technical presentations for meetings and conferences.

Qualifications

MinimumEducation Requirement:

Basic Requirements Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. ANDSpecialized Experience:

For the GG-09, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal services. Experience for this position includes formal training or education with geographic information systems (GIS), statistical, and/or satellite image analysis software to process, describe, and analyze geographic and demographic information; apply cartographic or statistical techniques to carry out integrated data collection and analysis; interpret maps, charts, imagery, and demographic tabulations to present and illustrate geographic data in narrative or graphic form; design, analyze, and implement maps, charts, graphs, and tables of a geographic area such as a country, state, or county; identify, describe, and help to resolve problems involving geographic data analysis; AND provide advice and guidance to program officials and the public on geographic programs while keeping abreast of geographic developments.

OR

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

For the GG-11, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal services. Experience for this position includes using and applying geographic information systems (GIS), statistical, and/or satellite image analysis software to process, describe, and analyze geographic and demographic information; design techniques for geographic and demographic data analysis; applying cartographic or demographic techniques to carry out integrated data collection, analysis, and visualization; identify, describe, and resolve problems involving geographic data analysis; design, analyze, and implement maps, charts, graphs, and tables of a geographic area such as a country, state, or county; present research and technical results orally or in writing in venues such as meetings, conferences, and publications; AND provide advice and guidance to program officials and the public on geographic programs while keeping abreast of Geo-demographic developments.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

For the GG-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal services. Experience for this position includes independently applying geographic information systems (GIS), statistical, and/or satellite image analysis software to process, describe, and analyze geographic and demographic information; design and implement advanced techniques for geographic and demographic data analysis; coordinate projects relating to geographic and demographic data analysis; applying cartographic or demographic techniques to carry out integrated data collection, analysis, and visualization; identify, describe, and resolve complex problems involving geographic data analysis; present research and technical results orally or in writing in venues such as meetings, conferences, and publications; AND provide expert advice and guidance to program officials and the public on geographic programs and keeping abreast of Geo-demographic developments.

Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.

Pay Range

$59,534.00 - $112,240.00
