Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary (GS-09): $52,905 (Step 01) to $68,777 (Step 10); Salary(GS-11): $64,009 (Step 01) to $83,210 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. Duty locationto be determined after selection. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Major Duties

As a Geographer within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

-Participate in the planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical, and physical processes that affected marine ecosystems.

- Perform assignments in planning the approach and collecting data needed to carry out less complex studies or portions of larger biological science investigations.

- Prepare reports on progress and completion of studies.

- Perform data analysis and write reports to evaluate findings.

- Plan, organize, and implement limited geographical investigations that affect wildlife and/or fishery resources and their habitat conditions.

- Develop, organize, ensure quality, and maintain project data in computer databases; and gather, analyze, tabulate and summarize scientific, programmatic, and/or budgetary data.

-Conducts field work with seabirds, including the endangered Hawaiian Petrel (Pterodroma sandwichensis) as authorized.

- Lead field work for one or more projects.

- Train, oversee, and may supervise lower graded technicians, and provide input to supervisor concerning performance of technicians.

Working Conditions:

Work requires physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Extreme temperature and weather may be encountered in the performance of field work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear.

GS-09

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include compiling and evaluating basic geographical facts from a variety of specified sources, ascertaining discrepancies in data, and presenting geographical information from specified maps, charts, and other source materials in the most useful format. This level of work would have involved following established procedures or detailed instructions and would have required a familiarity with a variety of basic geographic tools and sources.

For GS-11

One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: 1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. For example 3, extensive and precise instructions were provided and the project leader was readily available for consultation and guidance. Selective Factors

To be basically qualified for this position, applicants must meet the OPM qualification standard (above) and the following selective factors:

Currently named on an active Federal bird banding permit, such as the U.S. Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory Permit, authorizing capture, auxiliary marking, and collection of tissue samples from seabirds.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Pay Range

$52,905.00 - $83,210.00
