Major Duties

The basic duties below are described at the full performance level GS-11. At less-than-full-performance level, the incumbent will be assigned various tasks on an on-the-job training basis, with the difficulty of the tasks and degree of independent performance increasing gradually, as the incumbent becomes better trained, and demonstrates the ability to assume greater responsibility. At the full performance level, the geologist is responsible for budget and programming for the mineral program, planning and environmental coordination; develops, implements and updates the district planning system, provides laws, regulations and policy assistance to the public, prepares mineral reports and appraisals, provides surface protection, inspection and enforcement, and trespass. The geologist determines procedures for the safe abandonment of mine shafts and portals. Processes leases, permits, notices and plans of operations.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography ORCombination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience Requirements:In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, Specialized experience for the GS-05:One year specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the GS-04. Examples of specialized experience:geological field or laboratory work, making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling geologic data and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. Education: Degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

Specialized experience for the GS-07:One year specialized experience at orequivalent to at least the GS-05. Examples of specialized experience: performing field studies to gather geological samples and data; assisting with geological studies and surveys; interpreting and analyzing results to determine the validity and scientific significance of the data OR you have a combination of education and experience that equates to one year of experience. Education: One full year of graduate level educationorsuperior academic achievement.

Specialized experience for the GS-09: One year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07. Examples of specialized experience: performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher level Geologist in carrying out geologic assignments.This work experience would have involved following established methodsand procedures, or detailed instructions;using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures, and would have required a good general working knowledge of theprinciples and the theories of geology. Education: Successfully completed2 full years of progressively higher graduate education level education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

Specialized experience for the GS-11: One year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09.Examples of specialized experience: independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine geologic work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising inthe normal course ofthe work. At this level, Geologist have a sound working knowledge of the principles of geology and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. Education: Successfully completed 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. ora PH.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Pay Range

$39,623.00 - $94,434.00
