Major Duties
As a Geophysicist within the Volcano Science Center, Hawai‘i Volcano Observatory (HVO), some of your specific duties will include:
- Oversees HVO’s geodetic instrumentation, data acquisition, processing, and archiving.
- In consultation with senior scientists, plans for expansion of geodetic monitoring equipment to augment existing networks and oversees design and installation by HVO technical staff and others.
- Organizes and oversees surveys to collect geophysical data, especially deformation monitoring data ensuring that data are of high quality
- Manages collaborative agreements with other institutions who share geodetic data with HVO and responds to requests for HVO geodetic data.
- Performs geodetic research: Applies and modifies existing models to geodetic data to support understanding of magmatic systems and volcano-tectonic processes in Hawai‘i.
Note: This position is with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), Volcano Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey, located on the Island of Hawai'i. The primary mission of HVO is monitoring the active volcanoes of Hawai'i to provide timely warnings of volcano hazards. HVO conducts and supports research in volcanology and geodesy to assess hazards related to active and potentially active volcanoes, and to understand volcano-tectonic processes to improve its monitoring efforts. The incumbent is the authoritative source for volcano deformation data and information in Hawai‘i and leads all operational aspects of HVO’s geodetic monitoring program. The incumbent plans and oversees installation and upgrades of geodetic monitoring instrumentation in collaboration with the HVO technical group, supervises junior staff and volunteers, collects, processes, and interprets geodetic data from a variety of sources, and contributes to research and publications. Results are of critical importance to HVO and the scientific community worldwide.

For GS-13:In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original or ongoing geophysical studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification andadaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, scientists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geophysics, exhibit a highly developed ability in their application, and have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.

Pay Range
$76,730.00 - $118,612.00
