Job Summary

This position is located in Alturas, CA This position performs hydrologic technician work in support of hydrologists, civil engineers, and other professionals engaged in scientific studies of surface water, meteorology, sediment and debris production, and water quality for water resource and land management planning and design. Major Duties

  • Compile data for publication in hydrologic data reports, research by hydrologists, customers for hydrologic studies and project personnel.
  • Communicate with Federal, State and local agencies to exchange data and coordinate stream gaging and rainfall data collection
  • Support hydrologists, civil engineers, and other professionals engaged in water resource and land management planning and design.
  • Analyze and interpret watershed data to make recommendations for land management activities
  • Identify and/or correct deficiencies that are readily apparent in field data collected by field recording equipment
  • Compute hydrologic data for use in studies or reports and to furnish data to district elements and outside agencies
  • Apply skill in mathematics, the study of hydrology analysis and the consideration of techniques and procedures to support a variety of study, planning and design tasks
  • Modify approaches to accommodate variable conditions and to recommend minor changes to improve work processes or quality of results.
  • Assist engineer or hydrologists with field investigations to locate water courses, stream gages, hydraulics structures and drainage boundary divides
  • Identify watershed drainage boundaries, flow paths, elevation of area relationships, stream channel cross sections and basin hydrologic parameters on topographic maps and construction plans
  • Assist with planning necessary for modification of existing data collection stations or installation of new stations to augment or improve existing instrumentation
  • Make sketches of locations, dimensions, layouts, and modifications
  • Prepare correspondence relating to the request for or transmittal of hydrologic data, or any other matters relating to the unit?s instrumentation programs
  • Prepare tables, graphs and complex or unusual plates for presentation of hydrologic reports.
  • Prepare precipitation, sedimentation, and reservoir operation reports for transmittals to higher authority and other agencies
  • Maintain records to document the evaluation and interpretation of hydrologic data

For the GS-1316-06: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Computed mean daily gage heights from water stage record charts, edited record tapes, and made corrections based on field observation notes; Prepared maps showing well elevations and depth to water, hydrographs, profiles, and well locations; Installed, adjusted, inspected, and serviced crest-stage indicators, well-recorders, and other instruments for the collection of ground and surface water data; and checked gage settings to ensure continued accuracy of the records obtained from instruments: OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: engineering, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, hydrology, ecology, geology, or geomorphology); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. For the GS-1316-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Performed hydrologic technician work such as prepare, analyze, chart, annotate forms, and complete hydrographs; Assisted in the performance of a variety of hydrology tasks such as conducting, monitoring, coordinating, and controlling various phases of data collection and analysis projects or operations; Used topographic maps and construction plans to determine watershed drainage boundaries, flow paths, elevation area relationships, stream channel cross-sections, and basin hydrologic parameters; OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as: (such as: engineering, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, hydrology, ecology, geology, or geomorphology); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Pay Range

$37,843.00 - $54,670.00
