Major Duties

As a Hydrologist within the Volcano Science Center, California Volcano Observatory, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Plans, coordinates and conducts basic and applied research on volcano-hydrothermal systems. Scientific studies are of considerable scope and complexity within the context of a large and multi-faceted research project.
  • Establishes and maintains monitoring networks in volcanic and geothermal areas.
  • Collects, prepares and analyzes a wide suite of water and gas samples for chemical and isotropic composition.
  • Publishes technically sound reports and journal publications.
  • Presents scientific findings at conferences.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands:

Work is sometimes physically demanding and involves sampling high-temperature fluids and measurements at volcanoes with steep topography, and at high elevation. Work also demands prolonged standing in a laboratory.

Work Environment:

Field conditions may include extreme weather conditions and remote environments. Laboratory work is performed in a clean, dry air-conditioned building. Laboratory work may require the use of proper safety equipment such as safety goggles and gloves. Hazardous chemicals must be used under appropriate safeguards as outlined in Chemical Hygiene Plans and Job Safety Analyses for the laboratories.

Qualifications

This position has a basic education requirement. For information on basic qualifications, which includes information on whether you may substitute education for specialized experience, please click on the following: Hydrology Series.

In addition to the basic education requirements listed in the link above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the following:

One year of appropriate professional experience in hydrological studies of volcanic areas that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include planning and executing complex hydrologic studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena, and sampling volcanic and geothermal fluids. This work typically involved conventional methods and techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents, and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Hydrologists have a very good knowledge of hydrology and their application in volcanic settings, and the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
