Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD), Systems Support Directorate, Research and Development Division, Washington, District of Columbia. The primary purpose of this position is to manage CWMD research and development or test and evaluation programs as they relate to countering weapons of mass destruction. This position is being filled under the Direct Hire Authority for STEM positions.

Major Duties

As a Interdisciplinary Biological Scientist/Physical Scientist (Direct Hire) GS 0401/1301 14, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Coordinate and review multi-faceted work being undertaken in diverse locations, setting standards for the work, reviewing work for consistency with agency policy and goals, and furnishing technical advice as needed.
  • Develop short- and long-range plans, including new approaches to problems, and required resources given existing capabilities.
  • Apply new techniques and original methods of attack to the solution of important problems that present novel or unprecedented aspects, and for which there is a dearth of scientific literature.
  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership in formulating research attacks on problems that have been identified as critical obstacles to progress or development in areas of exceptional interest.
  • Represents organization on scientific and technical committees.

Qualifications

This is an Interdisciplinary position which may be filled under any of the following occupational series, depending on the qualifications of the applicant and needs of the agency: - Biological Scientist, GS- 0401

- Physical Scientist, GS- 1301 All applicants must meet at least one of the following Basic Requirements for either the Biological Science, and/or General Physical Science series: Basic Requirement, Biological Science, GS-0401

A. Possess a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Note: You must submit documentation to support your claim or you will be found ineligible. OR B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement, General Physical Science, GS-1301:

A. Possess a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement listed above, you qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level performing the following duties: Conducting project management and oversight of the research and development projects involving of chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear detection systems relating to national security programs; Evaluating research and development programs relating to national security programs to assess project performance; Developing guidance for engineers or scientists who solve technical problems relating to the research and development of national security sensor systems. Communicating orally and in writing to negotiate with organizations for research and development and/or test and evaluation programs; and to develop written reports. Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level. NOTE(s):

Pay Range

$121,316.00 - $157,709.00
