Job Summary
This position is located in Redwood National and State Parks, in the Resources Management and Science Division. Please visit find a park for additional park information.
Major Duties
- Develop and implement Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and related technologies in a national park, including 3 state parks that lie within it.
- Combine cartographic, resource, operations, and geographic knowledge to provide geospatial data and technology applications that support cultural and natural resource management, park operations, planning, and facilities management.
- Create, update, and manage spatial data to perform analyses and create map products for a wide variety of end users.
- Inspect and edit digital geospatial data to ensure compliance with applicable specifications, certifying it for inclusion in the corporate data base.
- Train and instruct others in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and related technologies.
Qualifications
Since this is an Interdisciplinary position, you must meet the BASIC educational requirement for at least ONE series *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Specialized Experience and/or Education in order to qualify for this position. BASIC EDUCATION for the Geographer GS-0150: A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts. BASIC EDUCATION for the Biologist GS-0401: A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Note: You must submit your transcripts.

B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts. BASIC EDUCATION for the Physical Scientist GS-1301: A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. Note: You must submit your transcripts.
OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Note: You must submit your transcripts. BASIC EDUCATION for the Cartographer GS-1370: A: Have successfully completed a bachelor's or higher in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).
OR
B: Have a combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants whose experience in cartography was in the Federal service may have gained this experience by working in an occupational series other than GS-1370. Occupations in which experience may have been gained include Geography, GS-150; Civil Engineering, GS-810; General Physical Science, GS-1301; Geodesy, GS-1372; and Land Surveying, GS-1373. And Specialized Experience and/or Education: GS-07: Have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) compiling digital cartographic information; (2) editing digital geospatial data; (3) utilizing GIS and image processing software and techniques; and (4) performing spatial analyses.
OR
Have successfully completed one (1) full year of progressively higher level graduate education. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education). OR
Have completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying for this position, from an accredited college or university, and meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement based on the following: (1) class standing (upper third standing in graduating class based on completed courses); (2) grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum); or (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education). GS-09: Have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) using GIS and GPS software and technology to provide technical support in the maintenance of geospatial and relational databases; (2) training others in the use of GIS applications; (3) creating maps following established guidelines; and (4) developing, updating, and managing map services.
OR
Have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college or university with major study that is directly related to the position. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education).
OR
Have less than the full amount of specialized experience required but have more than one year of graduate level education with a major in a directly related field. Therefore, you have a combination of experience and education. To calculate your combination, first determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required. Then determine your education as a percentage of the education required (only graduate education in excess of one year may be used). Add the two percentages. They must equal 100% to qualify using this option. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
