Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $104,182 (Step 01) to $135,440 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. Thereis one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Major Duties

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled as a Geophysicist GS-1313-13, or a Computer Scientist, GS-1550-13.

The incumbent will serve as a member of the project team that is planning and implementing the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system. ShakeAlert is a mission-critical, geographically distributed system with processing centers in Seattle, Berkeley, Menlo Park and Pasadena.

As a ShakeAlert Scientific Programmer within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

-Provides expert guidance in the design and development of the ShakeAlert system including the overall system architecture and the interaction of its various modules to ensure optimal performance.
-Writes new and modifies existing computer code to implement various modules for the production version of the ShakeAlert EEW system including earthquake detection algorithms, the central "decision module," and performance monitors.
-Participates in the developing tools and procedures within the ShakeAlert testing and certification platform.
-Ensures that code, configurations, and procedures are documented, checked into the project code management repository, and properly tested and certified.
-Develops scientific solutions to problems within the system including rapid detection and characterization of earthquakes and estimation of the resulting ground motions using both seismic and geodetic data.

In

addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: planning, executing and reporting on original or ongoing geophysical studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, scientists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geophysics, exhibit a highly developed ability in their application, and have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, computer scientists have wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
