Job Summary
This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Emerging Pests and Pathogens Research Unit located in Ithaca, NY. The purpose of this position is to provide professional support on the discovery, characterization and modeling of gene regulatory networks in bacterial pathogens of plants.
Major Duties
- Serve as a part of a molecular biology research team to devise, recommend and modify methods to obtain the information to address systems biology questions.
- Review pertinent scientific literature related to bacterial diseases and pests in plants and recommend methods and procedures for the research goals.
- Maintain official laboratory notebooks recording the methods and procedures used, and any recommended modifications and results.
- Perform genomic library screening; qRT-PCR; microscopy; microplate/phenotype screening; and ultra-high throughput sequencing.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree: Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND
In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At the GS-09 Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a molecular biological science research project related to plant pathogenic bacteria; preparing written reports of experiments conducted for inclusion in manuscripts, technical reports, or oral presentations; identifying gene mutations in bacteria; maintaining laboratory notebooks of experimental results; and operating and maintaining laboratory equipment or instruments used to research bacterial diseases or pests of plants. OR Education: Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees may include plant pathology, microbiology, and molecular biology. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as describe above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$52,905.00 - $68,777.00
