Job Summary

A Physical Scientist serves as an expert in planning and directing extensive research and experimental development as it relates to personal protective technology (PPT); Initiates studies and directs the establishment of new testing standards, recommends responses addressing safety and health hazards associated with non-compliant NIOSH approved respirators; Represents the Institute worldwide on respirator certification matters.

Major Duties

As a Physical Scientist you will:

  • Conceive, plan and conduct research on unexplored areas relating to safety and health where there is little or no theory to guide experimentation.
  • Conduct studies that involve technological advances including new and/or improved equipment/systems; performance requirements; selection and use criteria; and methods for testing and evaluating hazard prevention systems.
  • Serve as a resource both internal and external to the agency and provide consultation and advice to the agency in areas of personal research expertise.
  • Perform the administrative and personal management functions relative to staff supervised.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have a degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Have a combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in collaborating with research personnel to address safety and health hazards associated with mining.

Pay Range

$111,015.00 - $144,316.00
