Major Duties
- Investigate, measure, and evaluate environmental conditions. Review and analyze scientific data to properly assess and report on the status of environmental conditions that could affect human health and the environment.
- Investigate and study source pollutants, physical facilities and/or industrial plants to develop programs and methods to conserve natural resources and prevent, remediate or remove contamination in the environment.
- Serve as first responder for critical situations and hazardous materials sites. Conduct follow-up actions to releases and spills such as recovery and mitigation.
- Write and document complex pre-acquisition assessments and recommend alternatives to avoid or mitigate impacts of any land use proposals that may adversely impact fragile ecological environments or human communities.
- Draft program objectives, technical guides, and standards for identification and analysis of potential material sites. Propose programs and methods for proper investigation, handling and disposal.
Qualifications
Basic Educational Requirements: A. Have a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic educational requirement we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been for 1 year and equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. (If the position was seasonal, your resume must show periods worked. You may qualify at the GS-09 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your experience with assignments that involve background and broad knowledge in environmental engineering, mining engineering, hydrology, geology or chemistry for developing methodologies and strategies to investigate sites that contain hazardous materials. Such work generally must have involved making observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling data from source materials, and analyzing findings. Use GIS programs (e.g. ArcMap, ArcCatalog, Erdas, and/or open source products). OR Have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Masters degree, or Masters or equivalent degree physical science, engineering, mathematics, or related degree to Physical Scientist; OR A combination of education and experience as listed above. You may qualify at the GS-11 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your experience with assignments that involve considerable background and broad knowledge in environmental engineering, mining engineering, hydrology, geology or chemistry for developing methodologies, strategies, and solutions to investigate, assess, and propose remediation of sites that contain hazardous materials. Perform field work that provided a means of obtaining professional knowledge of and skill in applying of the basic concepts, principles and methodologies of environmental engineering, geology and closely related sciences, e.g., geophysics, geochemistry, or hydrology. Such work generally must have involved making close observations, taking samples, handling various types of instruments and equipment, assembling data from source materials, and analyzing and reporting findings orally and in writing. Use GIS programs (e.g. ArcMap, ArcCatalog, Erdas, and/or open source products). OR Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physical science, engineering, mathematics, or related degree to Physical Scientist. OR A combination of education and experience as listed above.
Pay Range
$59,165.00 - $93,056.00
