What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary GS-09: $64,535 (Step 01) to $83,897 (Step 10); Salary GS-11: $78,081 (Step 01) to $101,503 (Step 10);NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. Major Duties
As a Physical Scientist within the Geology, Minerals, Energy & Geophysics Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Oversee laboratory operations at the Pacific Ocean Paleoclimate Laboratory, including supervising analyses, maintaining facilities & instruments, training technicians & students, and sample archiving & database management.
-Perform biogenic silica analyses using wet chemistry and spectrophotometric methods.
-Analyze sediments using HCNS elemental analysis and XRF geochemistry.
-Process micropaleontology samples for diatom and silicoflagellate analyses. Conduct preliminary analysis of microfossils.
-Participates in the collection of sediment cores from ocean and lacustrine environments.
-Conducts field surveys using a GPS instrument.
-Assists in the preparation of scientific publications; presents and publishes results of studies.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The incumbent may be required to manipulate boxes up to 50 pounds. Field work may require strenuous activities including hand coring in lake and marsh environments, and hiking long distances over rough and mountainous terrain at high elevations with loads of up to 50 pounds. This work involves exposure to a range of weather and temperature conditions, extremes in elevation, poisonous plants, wild animals, and insects.

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.
For GS-09:
One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher-level scientists in carrying out physical science assignments. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; and independently completing recurring assignments, but referring deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to a designated person for decision or help.
For GS-11:
One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine physical science work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, physical scientists have the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.
