Major Duties

At the entry level of this position, you will:

- Prepare, analyze and evaluate environmental samples for the determination of contaminants and chemical parameters.

- Interpret and evaluate data to determine its significance.

- Implement and adhere to Laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control system requirements.

- Modify and validate methods.

- Plan and coordinate field monitoring events.

Qualifications

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:To qualify for the GS-11 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-09 level defined asexperience performing analyses using a variety of methods in an environmentallaboratory and experience entering data into or retrieving orreporting data from a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic discipline as described below.To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as experience performing and reviewing analyses in an environmental laboratory and experience operating or troubleshooting a variety of analytical instrumentation including Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC or Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) or ICP/MS or Ion Chromatography (IC) or Liquid Chromatography (LC)/MS or Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption/Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption(CVAA/CVAS) or Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) or Dimethylacetamide (DMA) and experience entering data into, performing review of, retrieving or reporting data from a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of physical science or chemical contaminants and parameters to analyze environmental samples and interpret data.

2. Knowledge of physical science fields sufficient to adapt precedents, make significant departures from previous approaches, accommodate unique requirements, and to determine methods to use in evaluating and interpreting significance of results.

3. Skill in using sophisticated laboratory instruments (e.g. gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer) and scientific equipment.

4. Knowledge of the use of a LIMS to document all analytical activities.

5. Knowledge of chemistry-based or physical-science based Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures and requirements.

6. Knowledge of federal, state, local, and/or tribal environmental regulations, policies, and requirements associated with inspection, enforcement and compliance.

7. Skill in oral communication to provide technical assistance (e.g. explaining methodologies, troubleshooting analytical systems, recommending corrective actions, etc.) to federal, state, local, and/or tribal government officials.

8. Skillinwritten communicationtoprepare laboratoryreports with findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Pay Range

$75,515.00 - $117,669.00
