Job Summary
The Space Biosciences Division at NASA Ames Research Center is currently seeking interested candidates to the position of Research AST, Biological Studies. This position's responsibilities include science leadership in theoretical and/or experimental research in support of understanding the effects of space flight on the biological processes of living organisms and systems.
Major Duties
- Provides leadership and oversight for scientific directions within the ARC Space Biology project.
- Defines scope of all technical science activities and provides technical leadership in major subject matters and program areas.
- Recommends short- and long-range goals of the program, develops detailed plans for implementing them, and oversees implementation of the goals.
- Coordinates with the Space Biology Project Manager to develop a top-level schedule for the project, and identifies resources required both in terms of budget and personnel.
- Represents the project with groups at ARC, other NASA centers, and at major technical and scientific reviews.
- Prepares technical material for publication in professional journals, NASA publications, and presents at technical and scientific meetings.
- Works closely with NASA Headquarters, other NASA centers, and the extramural community to develop strategic and scientific plans for Space Biology.
- Critically evaluates science for technical feasibility, impact and significance on behalf of the project and the division.
- Leads team of discipline and mission scientist, maintaining high scientific standards and ensuring quality science is accomplished on behalf of the agency and the program.
- Performs or contributes to original research in scientific and engineering work that pioneers scientific discover or enables exploration in space.
- Serves as a science leader for the Space Biosciences Division.
Qualifications
In addition to meeting Basic Education Requirements, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-14) level, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.To Qualify for the GS-15:One year of specialized experience is defined as experience leading and managing an independent research program in space life sciences or related field (e.g. radiation biology/biophysics, systems biology, astrobiology).
Pay Range
$154,687.00 - $170,800.00
