Job Summary
Serves as a Research Astrophysicist and the Chief Scientist for the Cosmic Origins Program (COR) in the Observational Cosmology Laboratory of the Astrophysics Science Division, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Provides scientific advice, organization and direction to the COR Program Manager, the COR Program, and the Cosmic Origins Program Analysis Group. Conducts an independently-directed program of astronomical research relevant to the science objectives of the Cosmic Origins Program.
Major Duties
- Serves as a Research Astrophysicist, conducting an independently-directed program of astronomical research that is relevant to one or more of the science objectives of the Cosmic Origins Program (COR).
- Publishes results in refereed scientific journals appropriate in expertise, scope, and distribution for development work.
- Serves as the Cosmic Origins Chief Scientist, providing scientific advice and direction to the COR Program Manager and the COR Program.
- Organizes and interacts with the Cosmic Origins Program Analysis Group (COPAG).
- Serves on the COR Technology Management Board.
- Provides overall technical insight into the development and management of budgets, policies, procedures, and operational schedules for COR Program missions and activities.
- Works closely with Program Scientists at NASA Headquarters and within NASA management to define and implement the Cosmic Origins Program. Coordinates activities with the Physics of the Cosmos and Exoplanet Exploration Chief Scientists.
- Keeps members of the astronomical community informed about opportunities, requests for information, activities, accomplishments, decisions relevant to the Cosmic Origins Program.
- Provides science requirements and other science input to technology development and prioritization activities relevant to Cosmic Origins science.
- Provides scientific input into the Astrophysics Biennial Technology Report and through it to the Strategic Astrophysics Technology Program within Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science.
- Serves as study scientist for early (concept) mission scoping, design, and feasibility studies.
- Serves as an expert consultant on broad projects and programs with national impact.
- Consults with all levels of management, headquarters personnel, other federal agencies, and to foreign and commercial organizations in a scientific discipline, in areas such as space science.
- Establishes and maintains liaison with program managers and works closely with their representatives to ensure that concerns such as proper requirements definition and adequate funding are met.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicants must meet one of the following:GS-14 requirements: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13), which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, participation and organization of teams conducting astronomical studies using data from space-based observatories, participation and organization of teams conducting mission concept studies, serving on panels giving advice to NASA or other scientific organizations.GS-15 requirements: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-14), which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Pay Range
$121,316.00 - $170,800.00
