- Apply a broad background in geology, geophysics, planetary science, physics, mathematics, computer processing, and numerical techniques.
- Development of remote sensing techniques at a variety of wavelengths to study geologic history and structure of surfaces on Earth and other planets.
- Assessment of geologic hazard and risk investigation as relevant to planetary geologic problems, including volcanic activity and impact cratering.
- Field investigations of geologic processes on Earth to develop quantitative models that are then used to infer details of geologic processes and products on other terrestrial bodies such as asteroids, the Moon and other planets.
Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
B. Combination of education and experience - course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. Specialized experience includes knowledge of and research experience in terrestrial geology, planetary geology, comparative planetology, and geologic hazard and risk investigation, defining research problems, developing and executing research plans, field research techniques, and presenting results at regional or national meetings. Accomplishments demonstrate expert ability to independently conduct planetary geology and terrestrial analog research. Studies developed and executed by the scientist are expected to demonstrate originality, soundness and value to the field. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
