Job Summary
You will serve as the Senior Technologist for Undersea Warfare Tactical Oceanographic Sciences in the Chief Technology Office of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT).
Major Duties
- You will provide expert advice to the Division and the Warfare Centers on research directions and program planning in USW Tactical Oceanographic Sciences.
- You will lead a new and essential alignment between the scientific agenda of the physical oceanographic community and the assured access and warfighting dominance imperatives of the undersea warfare community.
- You will coordinate programs that address varied undersea environmental parameters and dynamics that affect submarine, autonomous undersea vehicle, and torpedo sensor performance in the acoustic domain.
- You will be charged with addressing urgent naval capability improvement in both stealth and organic sensing performance for today's submarine classes and undersea warfare systems, their respective training and mission planning tools.
- You will be an agent of change in defining, integrating and leading a new generation of national innovation in environmental science and technology tailored to assurance of the continued undersea superiority of the U.S. Navy.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: Applicants will be assessed against Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs). Failure to provide a separate narrative statement which describes fully and concisely how your experience meets the Mandatory Technical Qualifications will eliminate you from consideration. MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS: (Each must be addressed separately in your Supplemental Narrative Statement. Each MTQ must not exceed 2 pages.) 1. National and international reputation for expertise in oceanographic sciences applied to tactical undersea warfare (USW). USW tactical oceanographic science knowledge includes modeling and empirical measurement of physical oceanographic processes over global, regional, sub-mesoscale and local scales as these processes affect submarine tactical operations and the performance of undersea vehicles, sensors, and undersea weapons. 2. Ability to plan and conduct research efforts integrating oceanographic sciences and undersea warfare. This includes proven ability to design and lead research campaigns employing scientific methods in analysis, simulation and experimentation that represent the performance of submarine hydrodynamic, optical, electromagnetic and acoustic signatures, signals, and signal transport as affected by ocean dynamics. Ability to prototype and demonstrate equipment and methods to enable submarines and unmanned systems to observe essential environmental parameters necessary to improve mission performance. 3. Ability to communicate, advise, explain underlying scientific principals and advocate for an effective research program in USW tactical oceanographic sciences. Ability to develop and lead inclusive, multi-disciplinary research campaigns amongst national and international scientific experts, academic institutions and multiple research sponsors. Ability to work with USW mission planners, submarine crews and unmanned systems operators to develop firsthand knowledge of mission complexity and limitations due to ocean environmental dynamics. 4. Knowledge of government, academic, and industrial research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) policies and procedures. Ability to focus unclassified scientific research based on assessment of warfighter needs developed and protected within classified domains. Ability to communicate effectively with SES-level research sponsors at Office of Naval Research (ONR), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), and Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). 5) Mentoring, and Competency Development of technical areas in support of Duties will include coordinating programs that address varied undersea environmental parameters and dynamics that affect submarine, autonomous undersea vehicle, and torpedo sensor performance in the acoustic, electric, magnetic, hydrodynamic, chemical and biological domains.
