Job Summary
This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS),National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) with one vacancy located in Boulder, CO.
Major Duties
As a Space Scientist Programmer, you will perform the following duties:
- Serve as a senior-level scientist and project manager who establishes and implements top level strategy, objectives, and performance measures; develops and maintains expertise in space weather; prioritizes work; and determines funding needs and allocations for assigned projects related to the development of models, model-driven and data-driven products, and tools to improve space weather forecasting and customer services.
- Serve as an expert providing guidance and direction in the programming and model development, management and maintenance of computer models used for developing operational products for dissemination to customers and to space weather forecasters.
- As the Senior Expert Scientist, represent the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) research and transition activities and results at National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and National Weather Service (NWS) meetings as well as with other agencies.
These duties are described at the Full Performance Level GS-14, the GS-13 is developmental leading to such performance.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:This position requires applicants to meet a Basic Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of specialized experience in order to be found minimally qualified. You MUST meet one of the following basic education requirements:
A. Degree: in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science, or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, mathematics, and electronics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.To qualify at the GS-13 level:SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to theGS-12in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Supporting the development of space weather forecast models. To qualify at the GS-14 level:SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Coordinating the development and implementation of space weather forecast models; and
Providing space weather advice and guidance.
Pay Range
$100,027.00 - $153,659.00
