Job Summary

The Student Trainee will perform routine and recurring developmental assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding about the aeronautical information business environment in the management of aeronautical data and information technology as it relates to aeronautical information systems and data.

Major Duties

The Student Intern with FAA’s Aeronautical Information Services will perform a mixture of routine and somewhat complex tasks under the general direction of a manger, team leader, or other more experienced employee. Regularly coordinates with a manager and other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments, and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks. The assignments are considered developmental in nature and for acquiring the knowledge of the principles and methods applied in the management of aeronautical data and information technology as it relates to aeronautical information systems and data. This position is designed to provide the trainee with initial experience and on-the-job training in the functions performed by an Aeronautical Information Specialist.

He/she applies basic knowledge and limited experience in performing tasks. The assignments include assisting manager or more experienced staff with variety of day-to-day functions associated with aeronautical information, including: development maintenance of Instrument Flight Procedures, En Route and Visual Charting, Airport & Terminal Products, as well as information technology and automation systems in support of these programs and analysis & improvement of various business processes.

The trainee carries out selected assignments intended to develop an understanding of the functions and systems for which Aeronautical Information Services is responsible. He/she performs a variety of clearly defined tasks that will enhance his/her knowledge of aeronautical information and aeronautical products.

Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance. In some areas, may have limited contact with external customers. Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no room for discretion. Receives detailed instructions from manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee.

Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee for guidance. The work is reviewed regularly during the assignment, and at completion, to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality. Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to the activities of the organizational unit.

Reference - OPM Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Student Trainee Positions.To qualify for this position, you must be currently enrolled on a full-time or half-time basis (as defined by the institution) in an accredited college or university, in a program that leads to a bachelor's degree, or higher in a related field (i.e. Information Technology, Navigation, Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Engineering, Cartography, Aviation Science,or other subjects related to aeronautical navigation and operations.)To qualify at the FG-3 level you must show completion of one full academic year of post-high school study.Gateways - Internship Program Eligibility:Must meet the definition of student. An intern who is graduating from a degree-seeking program and has been accepted into another degree-seeking program (e.g., graduating with a bachelor’s degree and immediately enrolling into a master’s degree program) may be eligible to remain in the Internship Program if the student continues to meet program eligibility requirements.Must provide proof of enrollment (e.g., official/unofficial transcript, letter from registrar’s office, or tuition bill) to the Gateways Program Coordinator prior to appointment and following each quarter or semester, as appropriate, to confirm that they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Interns in a certificate program, not on a quarter hour or semester hour system, must submit a bi-annual statement from the registrar or instructor showing that the student is progressing in the program on at least a half-time basis and that their performance/progress is acceptable.Must be a United States citizen.Must meet qualification requirements, security and/or medical requirements (if applicable) and any other requirement specific to the position for which being appointed/converted.Must have registered with the Selective Service System or have an approved exemption (only applies to males born after December 31, 1959).Must meet specific requirements as specified in the Participant AgreementYour experience examples should be specific and clearly reflect the highest level of ability.Experience may be subject to verification.APPOINTMENT - Appointment to an internship position will be temporary. If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after graduation.AGREEMENT - All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with the FAA that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship etc.CONVERSION - Although it is not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship program to a permanent excepted service position without further competition after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of degree). completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern's participant agreement. Conversion to permanent position is not mandatory or automatic and is subject to available funding and mission requirements.TERMINATION - Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.TRANSCRIPTS - MUST BE SUBMITTED. Pay Range

$31,284.00 - $40,667.00
