Major Duties
The USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center is seeking an undergraduate or graduate level student working towards a degree in geology, engineering, or physical science to gain practical experience in geology, geophysics or geomechanics research.
As a Student Trainee (Physical Science) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of geology, geophysics or engineering.
Duties include:
- Processing seismic waveform and earthquake parameter data using modeling software packages.
- Writing computer scripts and processing codes to manipulate seismic waveform data or earthquake parameter data used in research studies.
- Using enhanced seismic modeling codes to further improve estimates of earthquake source parameters used in research studies.
- Reviewing and preparing earth science literature, graphics and tables for scientific publication.
Qualifications
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.
Eligibility RequirementsIn order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program: You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and
Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum.
Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study (120 semester hours/180 quarter hours) in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics;ORB.Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education (CLICKHEREFOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE).GS-05:Only the basic education described above is required to qualify for the GS-05 level.GS-07:In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet at least one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:A.
