What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $138,917 (Step 01) to $170,800 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled as a Supervisory Biologist, GS-401-15, orSupervisory Fish Biologist, GS-0482-15, or Supervisory Physical Scientist, GS-1301-15. Major Duties
As a Center Director, Supervisory Biologist or Supervisory Physical Scientist, within the Western Fisheries Research Center (WFRC), some of your specific duties will include:
- Responsibility for all aspects of the leadership, administration, operation, and management of WFRC.
- Leads and develops collaborations with other USGS Science Centers, other Federal and State agencies, universities, Tribes, and non-governmental organizations.
- Plans, coordinates, executes, and manages broad, multi-disciplinary programs of research, inventory, monitoring and information management.
- The research program of the Center includes multi-disciplinary studies such as: aquatic habitats and ecosystems, genetics, physiology, propagation, and health; and molecular, species, and population genetics within these ecosystems.
- Plans and evaluates long range programs and projects where issues and factors to be considered are largely undefined or controversial and, therefore, require extensive analysis to determine the nature and scope of the problems.

Work is primarily sedentary.
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment with travel to laboratories, field stations and to locations where hazardous chemicals and/or biological elements may be encountered.

Biologist, GS-0401:
Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and coordinating major interdisciplinary projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a multi-discipline scientific program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a multi-discipline scientific study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major interdisciplinary scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
Fish Biologist:
Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and coordinating major fishery biology research projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a fishery program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a scientific fishery study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
Physical scientist, GS-1301:
Examples of GS-14 level work may include: investigations that involved highly unstructured problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues. The results of these investigations had significant effects over a wide region of the United States, or may have included responsibility for new technology especially critical to the organization's programs. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field.
