Major Duties
As a Chief of the Strategic Laboratory Science Branch (SLSB), within the Laboratory and Analytical Services Division (LASD), some of your specific duties will include:
- Oversight and leadership for scientific and technical program in strategic science laboratories in the USGS Water Mission Area.
- Works with staff to develop new ideas and analytical methods that support the USGS Water Mission Area.
- Responsible for quality control and safety for all laboratories, locations, and staff in the Branch.
- Establishes and maintains contact with USGS and Water Mission Area senior officials, as well as other Federal, State, Tribal, local, and non-governmental agencies and organizations, to provide advice and counsel on a wide range of water resource assessments, and to prepare the Water Mission Area to meet emerging analytical needs.
- Participates with Water Mission Area and Laboratory and Analytical Services Division management for strategic planning.
Physical Demands:
Work is sedentary in nature. Some travel is involved.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in an office setting, but minor field work may be necessary to visit sites where hydrologic observations are performed. Proper personal-protection equipment, such as personal flotation devices is required when working on watercraft or wading in surface waters.
Qualifications
1301-Physical Scientist:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. *OR A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. 0401- Biologist
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR A combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. 1320-Chemist: BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. *OR A combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. 1315-Hydrologist:
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. *OR A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-14 level:
One year of specialized experience leading scientific teams in developing programs which align with the contribute toWater Mission Area andBureau or equivalent scientific programs and achievementthat is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Examples of such experience may include serving as a senior expert involved in physical science/biology/chemist/hydrologywork for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in the physical sciences/biological sciences/chemistry sciences/or hydrology sciences. At this level, physical scientists/biologist/chemist/hydrologist typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect physical science/biology/chemistry/hydrology programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high-level forums.

Pay Range
$118,202.00 - $153,659.00
