Job Summary
This position serves as the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Director, responsible for managing a complex program of interpretive and educational programs, operations, natural resources and partnerships, and supervision. This position is located with the Alaska Region, Tongass National Forest, Juneau Ranger District. Major Duties
- Manages the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and surrounding facilities.
- Supervises several permanent and temporary employees and interns on a year-round basis of up to 30 employees and interns at various grade levels and specialties.
- Leads the implementation of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Master Plan, working with team members from the regional, supervisors, and district offices.
- Manages the recreation fee program at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, working closely with special use administrators, and bookstore management to ensure collections meet agency protocols.
- Oversees the interpretive program ensuring the highest quality multi-media products to inform and educate a diverse public about area natural phenomena and Forest Service programs.
- Manages the natural and cultural resources of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center area including salmon and bears for interpretive as well as conservation benefits. Provide for safety of visitors and employees.
- Coordinates and manages Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center facilities so they are ready for public use and arrange for necessary maintenance.

Successfully completed a four year degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. B. A combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service conducting daily operations of a visitor services center that includes a program of interpretive and education programs, operations, recreation management, and special use permits. OR - having a successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree in a recreation management program of study. OR - having a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education in a recreation management program of study (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level managing, administering and overseeing a visitor services center's natural resources and interpretative management, recreation/tourism, and conservation education programs. There is no substitute of education for experience at the GS-12. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
Pay Range
$69,349.00 - $108,061.00
