Job Summary

You will serve as a Supervisor, Physical Scientist Latent Prints Branch (Latent Print), U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory, Defense Forensic Science Center, an organization providing forensic laboratory services to the Army and Department of Defense (DoD) in support of conducting and controlling criminal investigations and of operational requirements as established by U.S. Combatant Commanders.

Major Duties

  • Supervise physical science professional work in the conduct of latent print processing, comparison and research.
  • Manage and supervise the day to day activities of the Forensic Latent Print Branch comprised of senior forensic physical scientist.
  • Utilize professional knowledge of varied physical sciences, e.g., biology, chemistry, to direct teams in developing new methods and means of examining and validating forensic findings.
  • Serve as an authoritative court witness responsible for presenting independent, objective opinion testimony on complex technical issues in terms that are understandable to the audience.
  • Provide technical training for Latent Print Branch employees as well as facilitate training for other employees and law enforcement officials upon request.
  • Attend technical conferences and review professional literature to keep abreast of the latest forensic science developments in latent print technologies.
  • Develop budgetary information for operational supplies, long range instrument and equipment acquisition plan, and training funds.
  • Determines requirements for acquisition of new or replacement instrumentation, equipment and supplies, vendor service maintenance agreements, and provides recommendations, justifications and statements of work.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to accommodate workload demands and changes in allocated personnel, equipment, supplies, and techniques.
  • Develop and implement quantity and quality assurance mechanisms to include proficiency testing programs.
  • Determine hiring criteria, interview candidates and make final selections on referral lists.
  • Review and analyze individual and group performance and take action to resolve personnel issues.
  • Serve as rater or senior rater in developing performance standards, evaluating performance and nominating employees for awards.
  • Counsel employees and resolve individual and group complaints and problems, to include administering minor disciplinary measures.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Physical Scientist (Latent Prints): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience which includes conducting visual, chemical, photographic and/or other scientific and instrumental examinations of physical evidence to identify latent prints and/or impressions.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Pay Range

$110,231.00 - $143,304.00
