Job Summary

The Deputy Director of the Astrophysics Science Division (ASD) is a key member of the Division and Science and Exploration Directorate leadership team. The ASD provides scientific leadership to achieve NASA's strategic goals in astrophysics through theory, modeling and experimentation. The ASD conducts a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics and fundamental physics.

  • Supervises and controls the work of the organization. Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the Science and Exploration Directorate, Astrophysics Science Division.
  • Manages all aspects of Division responsibilities, including scientific research planning, concept development for new missions, supervision of staff, budget and workforce planning.
  • Manages a coherent research program in accordance with strategic goals and in carrying out the organizational management of the Division.
  • Serves as an advocate, both internally and externally, for scientific programs being carried out in ASD, and is expected to forge relationship with the other GSFC science divisions, directorate, external scientific institutions worldwide.
  • Conducts special studies for Program/Project.
  • Conducts studies of resources, natures and effects of magnetic, gravitational and electric fields, as well as energetic particles in space environments (i.e. mapping and plotting the Earth's magnetic field, etc.)

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-14), which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.To qualify for the GS-15:One year of specialized experience is defined as experience working as recognized researcher in astrophysics, astronomy, or a related space science field with documented publications and presentations; experience leading a team of scientists, research groups, and/or laboratories involved in performing investigative research and conducting studies of the effects of magnetic fields and particles in space environments; experience leading strategic planning, budgeting activities, and managing resources; experience performing mission development functions supporting research and development.

Pay Range

$137,849.00 - $166,500.00
