Job Summary

This position is located in the Eastern Regional Research Center for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). In this position, you will serve as the Research Leader (RL) for the Molecular Characterization of Foodborne Pathogens (MCFP) Research unit at the Eastern Regional Research Center, Wyndmoor, PA.

Major Duties

  • Develop methods to Rapidly separate and concentrate pathogens from food, as well as advanced techniques for the detection and typing of pathogenic bacteria.
  • Develop protocols for the on-farm production and utilization of symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to enhance mineral-nutrient uptake by crops.
  • Specifically focus on investigating food borne pathogen evolution, virulence, and adaptation to environmental conditions.
  • Conceive and design research, collect, analyze, summarize, and interpret research data, at a team level and independently, to report research in local, national, and international meetings and to publish research findings in peer reviewed Journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements series-0401

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirements series-0403 Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirements series-1320 Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Additional Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are: Leading a food safety research project; primary author on publications in peer-reviewed journals for those that impact the advancement of the field food safety or are viewed as authoritative; Conceiving and formulating novel research ideas and methodologies that advance the food safety field of science or are cited by other scientists; Invited speaker to symposia; Experience communicating with stakeholder organizations and translating industry needs into researchable activities; and managing and balancing food safety research programs and staff. GS-15: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-15 level of this position are: having strong publication records in food safety and related areas; Leading multidisciplinary teams to develop research project plans and/or to write research proposals; Planning research procedures and techniques and designing experiments and collecting data with other team members including from other agencies, organizations or commercial partners; Presenting scientific information to officials in government, industry, and universities, customers, partners, stakeholders, support personnel, and participating in organizing annually or bi-annually national and international professional conferences. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The following KSAs will also be used to evaluate candidates in the interview and selection process:1. Ability to lead and accomplish work through others (i.e. team building, conflict management, cultural awareness, strategic thinking, technology management, and political savvy.)2. Ability to communicate with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds in a variety of situations. Pay Range

$117,188.00 - $170,800.00
