Job Summary
This position is located in the Alaska Region, Chugach National Forest, Supervisor's Office, Engineering Unit and serves as a skilled member of a survey crew. Major Duties
- Duties are listed at the full performance level of a GS-05.
- Performs a variety of surveying assignments associated with the Forest's engineering and cadastral surveying work.
- Conducts simple traverse surveys using manual instruments including compass and chain.
- Searches, evaluates, and monuments public land corners.
- Records and calculates surveying data recognizing inconsistencies requiring supplemental information.
- Uses electronic distance measuring systems such as total Stations, survey grade GNSS GPS, (and/or other instruments) in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines.
- Records data and makes sketches of topography and other physical features in field book.
- Records and measures areas through use of manual and electronic recording and measuring devices.
- Reports instances of inadequate recording and operation due to equipment failure or deviation, or changing conditions which have an effect on the operation.
Qualifications

Provide course descriptions as necessary. Basic Requirement: GS-04: (6) Six months of general experience and (6) Six months of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-03. General experience is defined as: Observed technical work, such as construction inspector or surveyor work. Performed general office duties, such as filing and maintaining simple records. Performed simple arithmetic computations. Specialized experience is defined as: technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Qualifying Specialized experience is defined as: (Must meet 1 of the following) Responsible as a rod person on land surveys; measured slope and horizontal distance by using a variety of surveying instruments. OR Successful completion of 2 years of post-secondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: technical work which provides knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and terminology of surveying to complete assignments. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Specialized experience for qualifying is: (Must meet 2 of the following to be qualified) Used basic land survey equipment to acquire special information; assisted in searching for land survey corners; assist in compiling field sketches and composing brief notes. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. OR Successful completion of 2 years of post-secondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$34,901.00 - $39,048.00
